Vienna
The mixture of K&K charm and modern open-mindedness makes Vienna a favourite and eventful destination for us. That's why we have often visited Vienna.
Between 2000 and 2015, we visited Vienna in early spring in combination with the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), and now mostly in summer, sometimes in addition to lectures by Rainer at the Vienna University General Hospital.
With its diverse cultural and tourist attractions, Vienna is worth a visit at any time of year. The possibilities for visitors to Vienna are immense. The late Gothic St Stephen's Cathedral with St Stephen's Square in front is the central meeting point in the heart of Vienna. The cathedral's characteristic roof pattern, its double-winged altar from 1447 and the pulpit are impressive. After climbing 343 steps, the view of the city from the south tower is magnificent.
The shopping streets of "Kärtnerstraße", "Graben" and "Kohlmarkt" are adjacent to St Stephen's Cathedral. From here you can reach the Old and New Hofburg palaces with their imperial glamour and grandeur. Here, the Imperial Treasury, the Sisi Museum and the Spanish Riding School are real visitor magnets. On the other side of the Hofburg, the monuments to Prince Eugene and Archduke Karl reside on the Heldenplatz. Vienna's city centre is home to a high density of important museums. The most important places to visit are the art history and natural history museums and the Albertina. In terms of music, Vienna is characterised by the State Opera and the Konzerthaus, where you should not miss the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Other cultural highlights are the Burgtheater and Volkstheater and, for some years now, the Museumsquartier on Marierhilferstraße. On the 11th floor of the "Haus des Meeres" you can not only eat well, but also have a great view of Vienna in the evening. The unique architecture of the Hundertwasser House is fascinating in the 3rd district. The Prater with its historic Ferris wheel is Vienna's entertainment district.
We know the modern Donaucity with the UNO City Vienna and the Austria Centre as the venue reasonably well because of the annual European Radiology Congress. Next door is the Donaupark with the Danube Tower, which offers a good view. In summer, however, we find the bathing beach on the Old Danube and the neighbouring "Alte Kaisermühle" garden even more attractive. Another outdoor activity we can recommend is the pleasant hike from Grinzing to the Kahlenberg, followed by a stop at one of the good pubs in Grinzing, which is not only worth a visit for its "Heurigen".
