Radiology of the hand

MRI - Contrast agent

Unlike the often-unenhanced examinations, in our opinion it is essential to perform MRI of the hand with the use of contrast agent (intravenous, intra-articular).

Advantages of intravenous contrast agent are the following:

  • Injury sites of structures surrounded by synovium can be more accurately determined by contrast enhancement on fibrovascular repair tissue.

  • Synovial contrast enhancement allows differentiation between effusion and synovial proliferation.

  • The activity of an inflammatory systemic disease can be determined with the intensity of the contrast enhancement.

  • In Kienböck's disease and proximal osteonecrosis of scaphoid nonunion, the proximal necrotic zone can be differentiated from the hyperemic repair zone.

  • Tumorous lesions, such as neuromas, neurinomas or tenosynovial giant cell tumors, can be more easily differentiated based on their contrast enhancement.
